District 97

Letters to the editor from
The Star-Telegram

Varied field in District 97

I'm thrilled that voters in Texas House District 97 finally have a chance to be represented in Austin. We have a field of excellent candidates; first among them is Dan Barrett.

Dan would provide strong leadership and be an independent voice for positive change. He's smart, experienced and compassionate.

Bob Leonard is the other "known" candidate in the race, but he supported House Speaker Tom Craddick before he didn't support him, until he decided to wait to make up his mind. We don't need more wishy-washy politicians.

I've made up my mind. I'm voting for Dan Barrett.

-- Bronson C. Davis, Fort Worth

Lately it seems that you almost have to hold your nose and close your eyes when you vote. It's difficult to get excited about candidates who spend a lot of time talking without saying anything that matters to regular voters. That's why I'm so pleased that Dan Barrett is running in District 97.

He's a regular guy who talks about regular issues and lets us know where he stands on things that matter. His support of the Children's Health Insurance Program, a crackdown on utility companies and not outsourcing state jobs is a refreshing change.

That's why I'm voting for Dan Barrett. I encourage you to do the same.

-- Memie Hardie, Fort Worth

Backing Barrett

The Dec. 18 runoff election for state representative from District 97 pits Democrat Dan Barrett against Republican Mark Shelton.

Remember that most Republicans are for the Iraq war and against universal healthcare. Almost all Democrats are against the war and in favor of some kind of national healthcare.

If you like the way that President Bush and the Republicans are running things in Washington, vote for Shelton to help keep the Republicans running things in Austin. But if you're like me and want change, vote for Barrett. It's that simple.

I know that a lot of affluent people live in District 97. So remember: It's OK to live like a rich man, but always vote like a poor man!

-- Herman I. Morris, Fort Worth

I predict that voters of all political persuasions will band together to elect Dan Barrett because he'll work for the best interests of all of us. Voters are united in an effort to rid our state government of corruption and arrogant dissemblers.

Democrats, Republicans and independents voted for Barrett in the Nov. 6 election. I'm fairly sure that we'll do that again and again until state government is cleaned up, as well as our air, water, food, beverages and everything else that needs a good cleaning.

Barrett is the one to help us clean up state government. A cleaner Texas will lead to a cleaner U.S.A., and that will help clean up the world.

-- Abigail Brown, Democratic chairwoman for Pct. 1189, Edgecliff Village
